Garling, Myers Twins Selected To All-State Teams
EAST LANSING---Hunter Garling was a big reason why the Gladstone High School baseball team made it to the Division Three state semifinals for a second straight year. And Garling has been honored with a spot on the Division Three All-State team for a second straight year. He was picked to the D-3 Second Team by the Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association as an outfielder. Garling hit a dramatic walk-off home run in the bottom of the tenth inning to give the Braves a win over Muskegon Oakridge in the state quarterfinals in Traverse City. Muskegon Oakridge, who Gladstone beat in the quarterfinals, had three players on the D-3 All-State Second Team: pitcher Wyatt Hilton, outfielder Hunter Benson, and infielder Jordon Fairchild. Hilton made it despite playing only one inning of the regional semifinal before being ejected for running over an opposing player at home plate. He had to sit out the rest of the regionals, as well as the quarterfinal game against Gladstone. That's because the All-State teams are based on a player's performance for the entire regular season, as well as in the district and regional tournaments. Traverse City St. Francis, who Gladstone beat in the regionals, had one player on the D-3 All-State First team: catcher Tanner Kaplan. TCSF infielder Matt Seybert was also an All-State selection, on the second team. Division Three State Champion Jackson Lumen Christi had just one player honored: pitcher Zach Mehelich. JLC Coach Phil Clifford was Coach of the Year. DIVISION FOUR---Two Rudyard High School players were selected to the Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association Division Four All-State First Team. Bulldog twins Connor Myers and Travis Myers led their team to the Division Four state semifinals at Michigan State University with a school record 30 wins. Connor was selected to the All-State First Team as a pitcher; Travis was picked as a utility player. Also selected to the All-State First Team: Newberry infielder Mitch Wilson. The team that beat Rudyard in the state semifinals, Centreville, did not have a single player selected to the All-State First or Second teams. |
