Gladstone's Jurek Wins Two All-Star Skills Events

MARQUETTE---The Upper Peninsula All-Star football game will be held on Saturday at the Superior Dome, featuring the best high school seniors from across the U.P.

It was the Skills Challenge on Wednesday, and Gladstone's Justin Jurek won two events. Jurek, who was a running back with the Gladstone Braves, beat out a number of U.P. quarterbacks in the "Quarterback Challenge" with a long throw of 55 yards.

Jurek also won the Receiver Challenge, making him the only boy to win two events.

"It's definitely a cool experience, especially being with the top quarterbacks in the U.P. and what not," Jurek told WJMN-TV Local Three News after the event. "A lot of these guys are really good athletes, really good quarterbacks and going on to play at the next level, so it felt cool to compete with them and especially to win."

Escanaba's Ben Larsen was the fastest lineman in the 40-yard dash, doing it in 4.861 seconds. Iron Mountain's Dan Willman kicked the longest field goal (45 yards).

Munising's Andy Cooper had the longest punt (61 yards), and Menominee's Aeron Forsberg was the fastest man, doing the 40-yard dash in 4.584 seconds. Nathan Lajoie of Sault Ste. Marie was the strongest man, bench pressing 225 pounds in eight reps.

St. Ignace's James Cryderman was the strongest man (non-lineman), bench pressing 225 pounds in 19 reps. Negaunee's Hunter Ridley was the best receiver amongst the Upper Peninsula's linemen.

The guys all travel to Big Bay on Thursday to visit the kids at the Bay Cliff Health Camp.
