British Soccer Camps Coming To U.P. This Summer

MANISTIQUE---The British are coming, the British are coming!

They're coming to teach our kids how to play soccer this summer.

Challenger Sports holds summer soccer camps in all 50 states, and will come to four Upper Peninsula cities this year.  This is a week full of drills, where kids learn foot skills as well as other technical and tactical practices. But also, a lot of fun.

A.J. Nwosu is the regional director for camps being held in Michigan. He says it's more than just soccer being taught at these camps.

"It's more of a cultural experience in terms of teaching life skills," he said. "We teach stuff like respect and responsibility. Integrity. Teaching them stuff they can use outside of soccer."

Nwosu says the style of soccer is different in England than it is here in the U.S.

"It's an attacking soccer here, where in England, it's more of a possession soccer," Nwosu said. "In England, which just keep the ball and pass it around and wait for a scoring opportunity. Out here, you guys just attack every opportunity you get. I think that comes from other sports like baseball or basketball, which are high-scoring games."
