Calumet, Forest Park Win Volleyball Regional Titles
 The Calumet Copper Kings and Forest Park Trojans are the last two Upper Peninsula high school volleyball teams standing after winning regional championships last Thursday. And both will be on the Manistique High School court for the quarterfinals on Tuesday. In Class C, Calumet swept Iron Mountain, 3-0. In Class D, Forest Park topped Stephenson, 3-1. A third U.P. team, Houghton, lost to Cadillac, 3-0, in the Class B regional final. The Class D final at Westwood High School saw the Trojans get off to a strong start against the Eagles. Forest Park won the first set rather easily, 25-11. The second set was tougher, but Forest Park prevailed again, 25-22. Stephenson battled back in the third set to prolong the match, 25-23. But the Trojans closed it out with a 25-21 win in the fourth set. The Class C final was moved from Gladstone to L'Anse to save on travel time for the Copper Kings. And Calumet was on cruise control from start to finish. The state quarterfinals for both Calumet and Forest Park will be held in Manistique Tuesday night. Calumet will face Traverse City St. Francis in the Class C quarter at 5:30, then Forest Park faces Rogers City in the Class D quarter at 7:00 (6:00 CST). Both U.P. teams will be trying to make it to Battle Creek's Kellogg Arena for the state semifinals, scheduled for Thursday afternoon and evening. |
