MARQUETTE---Dominik Shine scored 42 seconds into overtime to lift the Northern Michigan hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Ferris State Saturday night at the Berry Events Center.
With the win, their first in overtime this season, the Wildcats enter the holiday break with a 6-6-6 (5-5-4 WCHA) record.
After a scoreless first period, Ferris State jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 8:35 in the second when Gerald Mayhew capitalized on a defensive miscue to net a shorthanded goal.
But Robbie Payne notched the equalizer with just 29 seconds left in the second and then struck again less than two minutes into the third with the teams skating 4-on-4 to give Northern Michigan its first lead of the night.
Payne, who last enjoyed a multi-goal effort Oct. 16 with a hat trick against Lake Superior State, netted his first goal off of a cross-ice feed from Shine, beating Darren Smith five-hole. His second came after he stripped a Bulldog of the puck and raced back the other way.
With Zach Diamantoni charging the net, Payne lofted a shot that Smith couldn't glove.
With 9:55 on the clock, Brock Maschmeyer had a chance to extend the lead to two with the Wildcats shorthanded, but his shot rang the pipe. Just over four minutes later, Ferris State's Matt Robertson hit the post on a chance off of a rush.
Mayhew managed to tie the game at 17:21 on a redirection goal, his second of the game, setting up Shine's heroics.
Shine's goal came after a face off win by Darren Nowick. Nowick immediately sent a shot on net, and Gerard Hanson pounced on the rebound. Shine buried the third-chance try.
