Gladstone Wrestlers Win Escanaba Elks Invitational
ESCANABA---Entering Saturday night's final rounds of the 43rd annual Escanaba Elks Wrestling Invitational, the Gladstone Braves trailed the Eskymos by six points.
But the Braves got it done in the finals, and earned just enough points to win the team trophy by 5-and-a-half points, 190-184.5. Grayling finished third with 154 points.
Gladstone was led by 160-pound junior Austin Demeuse. He was seeded third, but upset top seed Devin Joseph of Grayling on a pin in 4:59.
It was the first varsity high school title for Demeuse, who finished second at the Marquette Challenge next month.
Earlier, Demeuse pinned Westwood's Hunter Manier in 2:47, pinned Newberry's Alex Henry in 3:38, and pinned Munising's Lukas Rittenger in three minutes flat.
Gladstone youngster Brody Sanville won the 125-pound championship, beating Escanaba's Sergei LaMarche in the final, 7-4. Earlier, Sanville pinned Ishpeming's Kadin Fox in 1:55, and topped Jenison's T'Darrius Trice on a 5-2 decision.
In the semifinals, Sanville beat Nick Onate of the Escanaba "B" team on a 7-1 decision.
In the 145 pound weight class, Gladstone's Bobby Beauchamp rolled to a first place finish. Beauchamp pinned Kingsford's Trevor Povolo in 1:24 in the championship match. Earlier, Beauchamp pinned Escanaba's Tyler Cook in 3:59, and then he beat Escanaba's Scout Wunder on a 9-1 major decision in the semifinal round.
And in the 130-pound weight class, Gladstone freshman Adam Bruce cruised to a championship, shutting out Escanaba's Ean Bevins in the final, 7-0. Earlier, Bruce pinned Grayling's Gabe Ervin in 14 seconds, and pinned Escanaba's Justin VanDrese in 3:10.
Escanaba's lone victory came from 171-pounder Breyden Papineau, and, like his best friend Demeuse, Papineau won in an upset.
Papineau was the third seed, but he beat top seed Reece Ferrigan of Grayling on a pin in 1:52.
Earlier, Papineau pinned Joe Plime of Florence in 34 seconds, and then topped Bark River-Harris's Tyler Labadie in 3:59.
Gladstone's Alex Chouinard also made the finals, but lost to Kingsford's Seth Collins.
Escanaba's Mo Hoque made the finals, but lost to Devin Philo of Benzie Central.
Bark River-Harris had two wrestlers place third: Tyler Labadie and Robby Broeders.
Munising's Hunter Sadler won the 189 pound championship with a hard-fought 11-6 decision over Grayling's Nick Petrie. Sadler earned his 100th career varsity wrestling victory on his former home mat. He transferred to Munising from Escanaba last year.
