Esky Girls Score 28 Runs; Win Three In Wisconsin

MAUSTON, Wis.---The Escanaba High School girls softball team scored 32 runs and swept all three of their games at the Wisconsin Dells Softball Challenge Saturday in Mauston, Wis. The last of the wins was a come-from-behind 7-6 win over Merrill, Wis.

That win followed a 7-2 win over LaCrosse Logan (Wis.) earlier on Saturday, and a 14-6 win over Galesville, Wis., on Friday. In Friday's game, the Eskymos had to overcome their own defensive blunders to pull out the win, with Taylor Rathe and Katie Ross combining to throw a no-hitter. Those two girls shared the pitching duties all weekend.

"We endured some struggles," Escanaba Coach Jamie Segorski said. "But when we had to, when push came to shove, we put the bat on the ball, scored teh runs we needed to score, and we made the plays that we needed to make."

Escanaba had to play "catch-up" in the game against Merrill, after falling behind, 5-1, in the early innings. They did so with big bats on this artificial turf surface, with triples by Katie Ross, Taylor Gauthier, and Callie Heller. Ross had three extra base hits in that game, including a two-run double in the sixth inning that capped a four-run rally and gave Escanaba a 7-6 lead.

In the seventh inning, a dropped throw at second base and a walk on a 3-2 pitch gave the Bluejays a chance to tie the game. The contest ended on a pop fly in foul territory near the Eskymo third base dugout that turned scary. Heller and Ross both raced in and didn't see each other, and collided, with Heller's head hitting Ross's face.

Ross ended up with an ice pack to the face, and Heller was down for a while before popping up. The Eslymos are now 5-0-1 on the season, with all six games being played on turf: here in Wisconsin, and three weeks ago in the NMU Superior Dome.

The Eskymos will play on dirt for the first time this Thursday when they host Manistique in a make-up doubleheader.

Game time is 4:00 at Lemmerand Park, with the second game to follow 20 minutes after that.

"We're excited," Segorski said. "I think we play a lot better outside on th dirt. That's what we're used to. That's what we like to play on. The hops and the backspin you get off of this synthetic turf is really tough. You don't get a bad hop, but you get all high hops. We'll be happy to be back on the dirt where the ball is normal for us again.""
