Marquette Lakeview Arena Named Hockeyville USA

MARQUETTE----Marquette is officially Hockeyville USA.

The community and Lakeview Arena have been named the winners of a national contest that saw 85,000 communities enter. The contest was run by Kraft Foods and the National Hockey League, and saw millions of people vote on line through several rounds of voting.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman announced Marquette as the winner on Saturday. Lakeview Arena will get $150,000 to make upgrades to the building, and the arena will host a pre-peason game between the Buffalo Sabres and Carolina Hurricanes in September.

Hundreds of people turned out to  viewing party at Lakeview on Saturday. The announcement was made by Bettman during the first intermission of the New York Islanders-Tampa Bay Lightning playoff game on NBC Sports.

The exhibition game in Marquette will be broadcast live on the NBC Sports Network.

The Thunderdome in Rapid City, South Dakota, finished as runners-up.
