Gladstone Takes Baseball Twinbill From Marquette
MARQUETTE---The Gladstone High School baseball team made the plays when they needed to and posted a pair of victories Thursday evening, beating the Marquette Redmen, 1-0 and 5-2, at Marquette's Haley Field. Clay Cole's RBI single in the fifth inning brought home the only run of the opening game, and then Lucas Weinert's RBI hit in the sixth inning broke a 2-2 tie in the nightcap. The late offense backed up a pair of excellent pitching performances. He got into trouble in the first inning when he hit two batters, but was able to strike out Tyler Delmont and Hunter Doucette to end the inning. The game stayed scoreless because of the defense of Braves left fielder Owen Hanson. In the fourth inning, Marquette got two baserunners on an error and a walk. Jay Oberg followed with a base hit, but Hanson came up throwing, getting Docuette at the plate. The Braves had just four hits off Marquette pitcher Jack Kocheaver, but two of them together in the fifth inning to score a run. Noah Olsen led off with a single, and was bunted to second by Hanson. With two out, Cole had two strikes on him when he ripped an RBI single, putting the Braves on top. That lead did hold up for the Braves, but just barely, as the Redmen rallied in their final trip to the plate. Delmont led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a single. He stole second, and went to third on a wild pitch. In the second game, it was Seymour on the mound, three days after his start against Escanaba was rained out after the first inning. The Redmen got on the board first when Alec Beauchamp was safe on an error and scored on a double by Austin Wachnicki. Gladstone took the lead in the fourth inning when Hanson got a two-run single with two out, bringing home Nick Trudeau and Weinert. The Redmen, however, tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on a Garrett Finkbeiner fielder's choice ground ball. The Redmen looked to break to tie when that Hanson boy stepped up again. Blake Henriksen hit a fly ball to left field and Doucette tagged up to try to score on a sacrafice fly. Hanson, for the second time in the doubleheader, threw Doucette out at home. It stayed tied until the sixth inning when the Braves got to a tiring Redman pitcher Jay Oberg. Seymour ripped a double down the right field line, but AJ Lundberg struck out and Hunter Botruff popped up. Lamberg, and that Hanson boy again, followed with RBI hits to make it 5-2. In the final inning, Olsen came on to pith for the Braves. He gave up a double to Doucette, but got fly ball outs to Hanson (of course) in left, Botruff in center, and Jack Stephenson in right field. It will be hard to find a better doubleheader performance for a high school player than the one Hanson turned in on Thursday. In the first game, he put down sacrafice bunts in both of his plate appearances and threw out a man at the plate. In the second game, he had a single, double, three RBI, and threw out another man at the plate. Gladstone improved to 7-7 on the season. Marquette's record fell to 1-12. The Braves return home on Friday for a game against the Peshtigo Bulldogs. Game time is 4:30. It will be broadcast live on WCHT-AM (600), and on-line at www.rrnsports.com.
