Escanaba Golfers Win Tourney; Gladstone Second

ESCANABA---The Escanaba High School boys and golf teams both won the championship of the Northern Michigan Bank Invitational Thursday at the Escanaba Country Club. Gladstone's boys were second while Marquette's girls were runners-up.

In the boy's tournament, Escanaba won with 319 strokes, with Gladstone second at 323 and Negaunee was third with 333.

Norway finished fourth with 343 strokes, Marquette (364) was fifth, Menominee (370) took sixth, and Munising (440) finished seventh.

Individually, Gladstone's Kyle Pouliot (pictured at left) was the medalist, shooting a 77.

Three golfers tied for runner-up with 78's: Bryce Douglas (Gladstone), Evan Kramer (Menominee), and Mike Schalow (Norway).

Two Escanaba golfers tied for fifth with 79's: Dylan Gauthier and Johnny Kositzky. Two golfers tied for seventh with 80: Escanaba's Nathan Rousseau and Negaunee's Jordan Mason. Escanaba's Nick Ramos became the fourth Eskymo in the top ten with a ninth place finish with an 81. And two boys finished tied for tenth with 82's: Gladstone's Adam Scheeneman and Negaunee's Carter Mason.

IN THE GIRLS TOURNAMENT, Escanaba won with 382 strokes, well ahead of second place Marquette, which had 445. Gladstone was third with 464, and Menominee was fourth with 513 strokes. Negaunee and Norway didn't have enough girls to have a team score, and Munising did not bring a girls team to the tournament.

Escanaba freshman Paxton Johnson continued her strong season by winning medalist honors with an 85. Marquette's Ellie Hicks was five strokes back with a 90. Two other girls broke 100: Escanaba's Megan Dagenais shot a 96 and Emily Hossele had a 98.

Gladstone's top golfer was Ashley Edwardsen, who was tied for seventh with a 109.

The golfers are back in action on Friday with the Gladstone Invitational.
