Escanaba Girls Finish Second At U.P. Track Finals

KINGSFORD---As usual, there was no stopping the Marquette High School girls track and field team at the MHSAA Division One Upper Peninsula Finals Saturday at Kingsford High School. But the Escanaba Eskymos finished a strong second place, tied with Sault Ste. Marie with 61 points. Marquette dominated the meet by winning with 169 points.

Escanaba's Jeny Brandt was a U.P. champion in the discus with a throw of 108 feet, 10.50 inches. Eskymo teammate Haile Waters finished third in the event (97 feet-flat).

Escanaba's 400 relay team of Megan Farell, Katie Demarse, Maddy Willis, and Sunny Martineau took second behind Marquette's team, finishing in 52.99 seconds.

Escanaba's 800 relay team of Martineau, Demarse, Lucy Sliva, and Willis finished third with a time of 1:51.79. Martineau, meanwhile, took second place in the 100 meters, finishing in 16:42, behind Menominee's Paiton Plutchak (15.95).

Marquette's Lindsey Rudden won the 800, 1600, and was part of the 1600 relay team. Redette teammate Izzie Peterson won the 100 and 200 meter dashes,

Gladstone finished ninth out of ten Division One teams with 21 points. But the Braves did boast a U.P. champion: Sydney Mills in the high jump (5-feet, flat).

DIVISION ONE BOYS RESULTS---
Marquette was also dominant in the boys UP Finals on Saturday, although the margin of victory was closer than that of the girls.

The Redmen won with 144 points. Houghton was second with 111 points, Kingsford was third (72). Locally, Gladstone was seventh (22), and Escanaba was eighth (18).

Both the Eskymos and Braves had one U.P. champion. Escanaba's Joey Wolfe won the 3200 run in 9:59.78, six seconds in front of Marquette's Lance Rambo.

Gladstone's Kyle McKenzie won the pole vault (11 feet, 6 inches). Gladstone's James Young was third in the pole vault (10 feet, 6 inches).
