Norway Pitcher Edwardsen Reaches All-State Goal

NORWAY---John Edwardsen is not the biggest guy around. The recent Norway High School graduate is not an imposing figure on the mound when you walk up to the plate as an opponent. But when you swing and miss for the first time, you "get it" real quick.

Edwardsen pitched his final high school game for the Knights in the Division Four state quarterfinals last week in Traverse City. And this week, Edwardsen was honored for his hard work as he was picked to the Division Four All-State Second Team by the Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association. A dream come true, says the lefty.

"I think it's awesome," Edwardsen said in a phone interview Monday night. "I told myself that if I had any goal for the year, it'd be to make an All-State team. I was real happy and I called my dad right away. I know that Coach Randy VanGasse pushed for me. I know how political it can be for U.P. kids to set selected. But I knew that I had good numbers."

Indeed he did. Edwardsen was 11-2 this season on the mound, with an earned run average of less that 1.00. His only losses were at Escanaba (a 2-0 game) in the regular season, and in that state quarterfinal game against Gaylord St. Mary in Traverse City.

"I always had to work hard," Edwardsen said. "I was a smaller kid and I needed to get better when I was younger. I went to camps. I went to the field every night with my stepdad and threw and threw and threw. I had to work on my off-speed stuff because I'm not overpowering. (Former Coach) Tony Adams was a big part of this. He put me in some big games when I was young. I thank him a lot."

Edwardsen is the third Knight to be named All-State since the program was formed. The others are John Grayvold, Jr., in 2012 and 2013, and Josh Brodersen in 2011.

Edwardsen is hoping to play ball at a small college in the Saginaw area next year.
