Former NMU Hockey 'Cat Kinnunen Dies In Crash

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.---A Negaunee native who played hockey at Northern Michigan University for four years was killed in a traffic accident late Friday night in Florida.

The Florida Highway Patrol tells WJXT-TV in Jacksonville that 35-year-old Justin Kinnunen was trying to cross the westbound lanes of Atlantic Boulevard when he was hit by an SUV at about 11:30 Friday night. Kinnunen died at the scene. The SUV driver was identified at Wiam Battah, and police told the television station that charges are pending.

Kinnunen played for Northern Michigan University from 2000 to 2004, scoring 14 goals and 24 assists in 158 games. He later played professionally in the ECHL, AHL, UHL, and CHL.
