MARQUETTE---The Northern Michigan women's golf team captured its first team title on its home course Sunday afternoon.
The Wildcats posted a two-round 490 (178-312), 25 strokes better than second-place Davenport.
Haley Hewer (40-75) and Avery Rochester (43-72) led the way, tying for the individual crown, the first won by a Northern Michigan women's golfer, by shooting a 115.
Saturday's opening round was cut to nine holes due to inclement weather. At the end of the first day, the Wildcats held a six-stroke lead over second-place Cardinal Stritch.
Northern Michigan played Greywalls Saturday and Heritage Sunday during its first home event in program history. The Wildcat Invitational's field included Davenport, Cardinal Stritch, Saginaw Valley State and Ferris State.
Karissa Guthrie also finished in the top 10, tying for eighth with a 129 (47-82). Baylee Dunmire took 12th with a 132 (49-83).
The Wildcats, who are in their second season of competition, set two school records en route to their historic victory. Their second-round 312 shattered their previous single-round record, a 331 posted during the first round of the 2015 GLIAC Championship. Rochester's second-round 72 now stands as Northern Michigan's individual single-round low.
The Wildcats return to action by competing at the Gilda's Club Laker Fall Invite Sept. 24-25 at The Meadows in Allendale, Mich.
