Rapid River Wins First Volleyball District Since '04

GARDEN---The Rapid River High School girls volleyball team won its first Class D district championship in a dozen years Thursday, 3-1, over Mid Peninsula in Garden Corners.

The Wolverines won the first set, 25-22, but the Rockets roared back to dominate the second set, 25-3. Rapid River won the final two sets, 25-21, and 25-21.

Erica Rubick had a monster 29 kills in the match, along with five blocks. Rubick had 24 kills in the Rockets' semifinal win over Superior Central Tuesday night.

It's the first district championship for the Rockets since 2004, when high school volleyball was played in the winter. The Michigan High School Athletic Association was forced to switch volleyball to the fall, and basketball to the winter, in 2007.

Rapid River advances to the regioinals next Tuesday at Westwood High School. The Rockets will face the winner of Friday's Forest Park vs Wakefield-Marenisco match.
