Marquette Sweeps Regional Track Championships

ESCANABA---The Marquette High School track and field teams continued their dominance on Friday, sweeping both the boys and girls regional championships at the Escanaba High School track. The Redmen boys won with 92 points while Gladstone was a distant second with 39. The Redette girls had 75 points, with Sault High second (49).

In the boys meet, Sault Ste. Marie's Ryan Jones won both the 100 (11.89 seconds) and 200 (23.93 seconds). The Sault's Ryan Sanderson won the 800 (2 minutes, 4.12 seconds), and Gladstone's Adam Bruce won the 1600 run (4:44.53) and 3200 run (10:18.77).

Marquette won both hurdles events, with Collin Shinners taking the 110 in 16.58 seconds, and teammate Bradley Seaborg winning the 300 hurdles (in 43.38 seconds).

The Redmen dominated in the relays, winning all four of the events (400, 800, 1600, and 3200).

In the field events, Gladstone's Jared Demeuse won the discus, with a top throw of 113 feet and 8 inches. Braves teammate Kyle McKenzie winning the shot put (12 feet flat).

Marquette sophomore Raphael Millado won the high jump (6 feet, 4 inches), and teammate Wyatt Goodwin won the long jump (20 feet, 7 inches). And the Redmen got the win in the shot put, with John Skendzel winning with a throw of 41 feet, three inches.

On the team scoreboard, Marquette won with 92 points.  Gladstone was second with 39, Sault Ste. Marie was third (33), Escanaba fourth (17) and Menominee fifth (6).

Individually, the top four placements advanced to next month's U.P. Finals.

In the girls meet, Sault Ste. Marie freshman Jordan Scott won the 100 dash in 13.57 seconds, and Sault High teammate Courtney Arbic won the 800 run (2:32.84).

The Blue Devils got a first place finish in the 1600 with freshman Shelby Eavou (5:41.51), and the Soo's Val Gage won the shot put (top throw was 32 feet, 2.5 inches).

Menominee's Abby Bradfield won the 3200 in 12:31.90, with Maroons teammate Katie Anderla finishing second. Gladstone's Sydney Mills won the high jump (4 feet, 10 inches), and Escanaba's Kaitlyn Lord won the long jump (seven feet flat).

Escanaba's Jeny Brandt won the discus by a wide margin, with her top throw travelling 110 feet. Brandt also finished third in the shot put, qualifying for U.P. Finals.

But Marquette had much more depth than any of the other schools entered.

The Redettes swept all four relay races (400, 800, 1600, 3200). Marquette also won both hurdles events, with sophomore Ahnika Pistulka taking the 100 (17.00), and senior Hannah Detmers winning the 300 hurdles (49.73).

Marquette senior Sierra Carlson won the long jump (16 feet, 1 inch).

On the team scoreboard, Marquette had 75 points, Sault Ste. Marie 49, Escanaba 29, Menominee 22, and Gladstone finished with 11.

DIVISION THREE BOYS: North Central 81, North Dickinson 55, Forest Park 32.
DIVISION THEE GIRLS: Stephenson 64, North Dickinson 50, Forest Park 26.
