Marquette Blues Split One-Run Games In Marinette
MARINETTE, Wis.---One rally was successful, but the other wasn't for the Marquette Blues American Legion baseball team Saturday afternoon at the Marinette Firecracker Tournament in Marinette, Wis. The Blues scored a late run to beat the host Marinette team, 4-3, but fell behind Manitowoc by four runs before losing, 5-4. That follows a tough 2-0 loss to the Green Bay Shockers on Friday. But in the fifth inning, Marinette's Matt Osterberg broke up the no-hitter when he ripped one off the top of the right field fence for a double. Trey Bretl then ripped one to left field for an RBI single to put the host team on the board. Marquette got that run back in the top of the sixth when Austin Wachniscki singled and went to third on a long double to left by Blake Henrikson....just past a diving left fielder Kevin Charlesworth. The Blues scored when Alec Gadzinski lauched one to center field. Center fielder Cole Tachmeier raced back and caught it over his shoulder, saving a big play. As it was, it was a sacrifice fly, giving Marquette a 3-1 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, Marinette tied the game on a two-run single by Nick Daye. The Blues regained the lead in the seventh inning when Jay Oberg blooped a single, and Hunter Doucette was hit by a pitch. Alec Beauchamp put down a nice bunt, and the throw to third base was late, filling the bases with no outs. In the bottom of the seventh, Marinette got one man on base, but could not score. Later in the day, the Blues lost to Manitowoc, 5-4, when a late rally came up short. Marquette scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning but couldn't tie it. The Blues face Pulaski at 12:30 CT/1:30 ET on Sunday. Click the thumbnails in the ARTICLE HIGHLIGHTS box above to see photos and videos from Saturday's Marquette-Marinette game. |
