Escanaba Minor Girls Top Gladstone In Opener, 7-2

ESCANABA---The Escanaba Minor Little League All-Stars (age 9-10) opened district tournament play with a 7-2 win over Gladstone Thursday at Lemmerand Park.

Kingsford edged Norway, 8-7, in Thursday night's second game.

Gladstone took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Addie Trombley got a one-out bunt single, stole seconnd and third bases, and scored on a wild pitch.

It stayed that way until the bottom of the second inning, when Escanaba scored three times to take control. Grayson LaMarche and McKenzie Engebritson walked to start the inning.

A double steal moved them up. A sacrifice bunt by Katey Lamb scored LaMarche as the throw to the plate was late, and Engebritson went to third base.

Lamb continued to second on that play, and then a passed ball scored Engebritson. Lamb went to third, and scored on a two-out single by Morgan Maki.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Escanaba grew its leas to 5-1. Engebritson walked to lead off and went to second on a passed ball. Lamb hit a ground ball to second that went through the legs of Kendall Taylor and scored Engebritson. Lamb went to second base, and a two-out infield hit to short by Clara Braun scored Lamb.

Escanaba put the game away with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. LaMarche singled to left, and then she stole second base. Engebritson doubled to center scoring LaMarche, and Engebritson went to third when the throw missed the cutoff.

Lamb then followed with a two-out single to center, scoring Engebritson.

Escanaba's pitcher, LaMarche, retired 14 straight batters entering the final inning. But she walked Taylor and Aubree Sargent to start the sixth inning. Lauren Sundquist blooped a single down the right field line tp score Taylor.

Rylee Gerow walked to load the bases, but ground out to first base ended the game.

Montogomery Pepin pitched all five innings for Gladstone, allowing seven runs (five earned) on six hits. She struck out ten batters, and walked four. LaMarche got the win, allowing two base hits and three walks, striking out eleven batters.

Gladstone faces Norway in an elimination game at 5:00 ET Friday in Escanaba. The winners bracket game features Escanaba and Kingsford at 7:00 ET.
