FAST START: Norse Win Streak Reaches Six, 70-58
IRONWOOD---The Bay College Norse men's basketball team jumped to a 17-0 lead and cruised to a 70-58 win over the Wisconsin-Sheboygan Wombats Sunday afternoon at the Lindquist Winter Classic at Gogebic Community College in Ironwood. Dre Tuominen scored 19 of his team-high 23 points to lead the Norse to their sixth straight win, after starting the season with three nailbiting losses. Marcus McKenney added ten points and five rebounds. Tuominen made all three triples he tried, and he sank all six of his free throw attempts. The Norse went up against a Wombat line-up that included three men of 6-foot-8 and 6-foot-9. But Bay held its own on the boards, being outrebounded just 53-43. One of the Sheboygan big men, Alex Antonie, did the most damage, pulling down 18 rebounds to go along with his 11 points. Sheboygan's Julian Jones led all scorers with 28 points. No other Wombat player scored more than five points. Bay's full-court press defense, implemented for the first time this weekend, forced 24 Sheboygan turnovers. The Norse committed just eleven turnovers. For the Norse winning streak to continue next weekend, the men will need to knock off a perennial national power in Mott Community College. Bay will face that Flint-based school as part of a tournament at St. Clair Community College in Port Huron next Friday afternoon. Tip-off is set for 4:00. The game will be broadcast live on WMXG-FM (Maverick 106.3) and on-line at radioresultsnetwork.com. The Norse will then play the host St. Clair team on Saturday at 5:00. Bay's next home game is on Dec. 9 against UW-Fond du Lac. Click the thumbnails in the ARTICLE HIGHLIGHTS box above to see photos and videos, and hear post-game comments from Tuominen and Johnson. |
