Charon Named Bay College Women's Softball Coach

ESCANABA---Bay College has hired Heidi Charon as the first women’s softball coach in program history.

Charon played four years varsity softball at Escanaba High School (2001-2004).  Leading her 2003 team to a 2nd place finish in the state.

Prior to high school play, Charon was on the Gladstone Little League All-Star team that was runner-up at the World Series tournament two years in a row (2001 & 2002).  She also played on travel teams that won multiple state and regional tournaments.

Following graduation, Charon played softball at Michigan State University.

“Coach Charon’s accomplishments are remarkable,” Bay athletic director Matt Johnson said in a statement.  “Heidi is a proven winner and the right person to lead our new softball program at Bay College.  She has won consistently at every level throughout her career and she has done it the right way, winning with class and integrity.”

Charon’s coaching career began as a coach on Escanaba High Schools JV team in 2005.  She has also worked with the Escanaba Varsity team from 2009-2012.  In 2007, Charon served as the head coach of the Lansing Eastern High School varsity softball team.

She currently works at Bay College in the Academic Support Department as the Retention Program Manager, overseeing the Supplemental Instruction program along with other student support services.

“I know without a doubt that I would have chosen to come to Bay College out of high school if they had had a softball team, and I know there are girls out there right now that feel the same,” Charon said.  “I’m so excited to help kick off the first ever Bay College softball team and to put together a group of our area’s best softball players.  We will be a force to reckon with.”

The Norse reinstated its athletic program, this Fall, with the addition of men’s and women’s basketball and men’s and women’s cross country.  Baseball and softball will be begin play in the spring of 2019.
