Esky Boys Force Winner-Take-All District Final, 7-1

ESCANABA---The Escanaba Major Little League All-Star baseball team (age 11-12) won its fourth straight game in the loser's bracket of the district tournament Saturday night, beating Iron Mountain North, 7-1, at Dickson Field.

The result sets up a winner-take-all district championship game Sunday night, with the winner advancing to the state tournament next weekend in downstate St. Clair.

Escanaba lost its first game of the tournament to Gladstone, and has been fighting to get back into it ever since. And on Saturday, it was one big inning that did the trick.

Iron Mountain scored a run without a base hit off Escanaba starting pitcher Ben Johnson in the second inning, and then, in the fourth inning, things turned around.

Bon LaChance led off with a single, then Mattie Kaven hit one to right field that bounced all the way to the fence for an RBI triple.

Johnny Weinert followed with an RBI single, then Cannon Arnt came through with a pop fly single to make it 3-1.

The hits kept coming as Eli Gardner, Bryson Lancour, and Johnson had back-to-back-to-back RBI singles. Then LaChance came up again and got another RBI hit, with an error attached to the play. All of a sudden, Escanaba had an improbable 7-1 lead.

Johnson had to leave the mound with two out in the fifth inning because he reached the 85-pitch limit. But Lancour finished up, getting the game's final four outs.

Escanaba and Iron Mountain North play again Sunday night at 6:00ET/5:00 CT.

The game will be broadcast live on WCHT-AM (NewsTalk 600) and on-line at www.rrnsports.com.
