Bay College Softball Ready To Kick Off Fall Season

ESCANABA---The Bay College Norse softball team is ready to kick off its inaugural season as the ladies are now into their third week of fall practices.

The drills Monday night were all about smart and aggressive baserunning, in a variety of different situations. The Norse have a roster of 18 girls right now, mostly made up of Escanaba and Gladstone high school graduates.

Two girls...Bark River-Harris's Paige Welch and Gladstone's Kaitlyn Hardwick are going to be dual sport athletes, also participating in basketball this winter.

Bay College Coach Heidi Charon is an Escanaba graduate who played at Michigan State.

She says she likes what she sees so far.

"It's been going great, we've been working hard," Charon said. "The girls have been really committed, and it's been great to get to know each other. I've been focusing mostly on working hard, and identifying our priorities as a team."

A lot of the pitching duties will fall on recent Gladstone High School graduate Lexi Winling, and she is excited for the challenge of adjusting to college life.

"It's been really exciting," said Winling, one of Bay's captains. "Some people might think 'oh Bay College, no big deal'. But it really is a big deal, and we're working really hard to get to where we want to be. I'm excited. I've been working with Leslie (Noel), our pitching coach, and she's incredible. She's helped me so much, and I'm excited to throw some different pitches that I haven't thrown before."

Escanaba High School graduate Emily LaFave is also a Norse captain.

"Evetyone's having a lot more fun now than in the first couple of weeks (of practice)," LaFave said. "We were all kind of nervous. We didn't know what was doing to happen, and who was going to be on our team. But everyone is starting to mesh together now, so it's going pretty well."

The Norse have their first fall scrimmages this Saturday at Gogebic Community College.
