This story was written by NMU Sports Information

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. –
The Northern Michigan University Women's Soccer team saw their season come to an end as they fell 3-0 to Grand Valley State University in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament Championship match on Sunday afternoon at Ferris State University.

The Wildcats finish the season with an overall record of 8-3-1 and a GLIAC record of 6-2-1. This season marks the first time NMU has notched eight or more wins in a season since 2011.

Ava Cook scored two goals for Grand Valley State.

2021 GLIAC Offensive Player of the Year Caroline Halonen took the Wildcats' only shot on goal in the first half. The team as a whole had four shots in the opening half.

Both teams registered two corner kicks and one save each in the first. The Lakers scored two goals in the first half of action to send the teams to the half with NMU down 2-0.

The Wildcats outshot GVSU in the second half by a mark of 8-6, while both teams again had two corner kicks each.

All-GLIAC First Team member Halonen and All-GLIAC Honorable Mention honoree Brooke Pietila each tallied one shot on goal for NMU in the second half.

One more goal for the Lakers secured their 3-0 title win.

Seven shots from Halonen gave her the match-high. Pietila was next for the Wildcats with two shots.

Maggie Kastamo, Rachael Erste, and Evelyn Flor added one shot each. The team tallied a total of 12 shots.

In 71:50 of match time, Wildcat keeper Shenae Kreps grabbed a save. Allie Jones was in the net for NMU for 18:10 of the second half.

There will be no NCAA Tournament for women's soccer as the NCAA Division II Presidents Council canceled the championship earlier this year due to challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.
