CLOSE BATTLE: Eskymos Lose To Westwood, 5-3

WEST ISHPEMING---The Westwood Patriots won three of the four doubles matches and beat the Escanaba Eskymos, 5-3, in girls tennis action Monday afternoon. 

There were three matches that went to third set tiebreaks.

"Plenty of close matches today, with literally every match being close enough to have gone either way," Escanaba Coach Chris Ogren said.

and were able to win a 3rd set tiebreaker by a score of 13-11. Sam 

Escanaba;s number two singles player Natalie Williams won her tiebreak over Westwood's Lindsay Williams (no rekation), 11-9. Natalie won the first set, 6-2, before Lindsay evened the match by winning the second set, 6-1, forcing the "first to ten" tiebreak.

"Natalie had lost to Lindsay the last two times that they had played, so it was pretty huge showing for her today," Ogren said. "Her serve is probably the best on the team, and her net play was dialed in today."

Westwood’s number three singles player, Alyssa Courneau, won her tiebreak over Escanaba's :izzy Sliva, 10-6. Corneau won the first set, 6-1, before Sliva countered with a 6-1 win to force the tuebreaker.

And Escanaba's #1 doubles team of Delaney McIntyre and Paxton Bullen won a marathon tiebreak, 13-11, over the Patriots' Lexi Olson and Alyssa Prophet. The Esky duo had win the first set, 6-4, before the Patriot paur tied it by winning the second set, 6-3. 

"Paxton Bullen stepped in on limited notice today to play #2 doubles with Delaney McIntyre," Ogren said. The pair played very well."

Escanaba's third flight came at #4 singles as Sam Mannanen defetaed Westwood's Taylor Jankovich in straight sets, 6-4. 6-3.

"Manninen was able to continue her terrific play of late with another straight set win," Ogren said. "Sam has now won her last 5 matches and has just continued to improve."

Westwood's #1 singles player, Jillian Koski, dominated her first set against Escanaba's Sophia Derkoa, 6-0. Derkos made a game of it in the second set, but Koski won, 7-5.
