Sault Blue Devil Girls Top Escanaba Eskymos 58-43

Marie High School girls basketball team led from wire to wire Monday night in beating the Escanaba Eskymos, 58-43, with three players scoring in double figures. The Blue Devils also won, 54-44, in Sault Ste. Marie in December. On Monday, the Blue Devile raced to a 20-7 lead after one quarter and 37-15 at halftimw. The Eskymos closed a 27-point deficit to 15, but could get no closer. Laura Innerebner led the Blue Devils with 18 points, while Claire Erickson added 14 points and Kenzie Bell chipped in 13, including two triples to start the game. "We tried man (defense) and that didn't work, and we tried 2-3 or 1-3-1 (zone)," Escanaba Coach Mike Beveridge said. "I give them credit. They came out running and shooting, and they looked very impressive. It took us a while to get going." Maki led the Eskymos with 18 points, and Grayson LaMarche added 13 points. Sault Ste. Marie improved to 15-4 on the season while Escanaba fell to 10-7. The Blue Devils wrap up the regular season Thursday at home against Newberry (0-11). The Eskymos continue tough week to end the regular season, with a home game Wednesday night against Menominee (12-6) and Friday at revenge-minded Calumet (15-2) on Friday. |
