1,000 POINT CLUB: Maki Reaches Huge Milestone

ESCANABA---Escanaba High School senior girls basketball player Keira Maki crossed the 1,000 point mark for her Eskymo career by scoring 30 points Monday night as the Eskymos beat Gwinn, 63-31, at the Escanaba High School Gym.

Maki reached the milestone in the second quarter as the Eskymos took a 17-12 lead and gradually pulled away from the Model Towners.

Maki joined the likes of Olivia Nash (Oakland University), Michelle LaFave (Michigan Tech), and Nicole Kamin (Grand Valley State) as players who have scored 1,000 points in their Eskymo careers. Maki has committed to play at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

"I feel great," Maki told our partners at Local Three News Monday night. "It's so unreal. You don't go into a team as a sophomore thinking that you're going to reach this, but I have some great teammates and amazing coaches."

Besides her 30 points, Maki had her sixth double-double of the season, pulling down ten rebounds, had three assists, and on defense, she blocked four shots and had six steals.

"It's all self-made," Escanaba Coach Tracy Hudson told Local Three. "She's worked so hard for this. She's a team player. It's not easy to get to 1,000 points. We haven't had too many girls get there. She got there. We're super proud of her and what she's accomplished."

Maki, who's twin sister Morgan is also on the Eskymo team, is the daughter of Lisa Jamula Maki, who was Northern Michigan University's All-time leading scorer for more than two decades before being recently passed up by current Wildcat Makaylee Kuhn.

Escanaba improved to 8-7 on the season, and will play its next three games on the road. With the loss, the Model Towners fell to 1-16 on the season.
