Sault Hockey Team Battles, But Falls In State Final

PLYMOUTH, Mich.---The only Upper Peninsula high school hockey team to make it to Plymouth represented the region well on Saturday, but could not beat the state's best team in the Division Three championship game.

The Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils lost to the Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Cranes, 4-2, at Compuware Arena. Kyle TenEyck and Chase Gamelin scored goals for the Blue Devils, who finish the season with a 22-9 record.

Cranbrook, a private school from suburban Detroit, was the top-ranked team of all three classes all season long, according to US High School Hockey On-Line.

"At the end of the day, you've got the two best teams in the state here," Sault Ste. Marie coach John Ferroni told the MHSAA's "Second Half" after the game. "I've seen most of the D3 teams in the state this year. I feel we're the next-best team.

"They're obviously the best team in the state," Ferroni continued. " To be honest with you, I think they're better than Division 2. They obviously can play with the Division 1 teams. They're a wonderful-looking hockey team, just so poised and mature out there with the puck."

It was the 16th state championship in Cranbrook's hockey history. The Blue Devils were playing in a state final for the first time in a dozen years. The Soo was outshot, 38-10, in the game, but managed to stay close as goalie Nick McKenzie made 34 saves.

"I knew we were going to give up between 30-35 shots," Ferroni said. "I thought if we could keep the penalties down, that would keep the shots on goal down. That didn't happen too well for us. We had our spurts in the game, but just not enough of them to create offense."

Cranbrook (28-2-1) got two straight goals from senior Alex Alger in the second period after TenEyck had cut the Soo deficit to 2-1.

"When you get it close like that," Ferroni said, "you think maybe we'll get lucky with another shot and score a goal and put some pressure on them, even though the shots on goal were a vast difference."

BLUE DEVILS WIN SEMIFINAL IN DOUBLE OVERTIME

The Yoopers survived, at least for one more day.

The Sault High Blue Devils hockey team pulled out a 4-3, double-overtime victory, over Flint Powers Catholic in Friday's Division Three state semifinal at Compuware Arena.

Eric Hillock scored the game-winning goal late in the second overtime to lead the Blue Devils (22-8-0) into Saturday's state championship game. The Soo will face Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook (27-2-1), the state's #1-ranked team all season long, at 2:00.

Hillock's winning goal was his second of the game. Ben LaCross and Blake Mastaw also scored for the Sault. The Blue Devils outshot Flint Powers, 54-21 in the game.
