Manistique High School sports broadcaster Dick Ketcik has been given a statewide reward for his work with the Emeralds on the radio. Manistique High School graduate Mike Nagy won the Michigan Junior Amateur Golf Tournament championship Thursday in Flint. He defeated Otto Black of Pinckney Michigan 3-and-1 to win the title of the 34th annual event. The 18-year-old Nagy will attend the University of Tennessee this fall on a golf scholarship. The Marquette Redmen swept the Division One boys and girls championships at the Upper Peninsula Track and Field Finals in Kingsford on Saturday. In Division Two, the Saint Ignace Saints took the team title for both the boys and girls. And in Division Three, Pickford and Brimley took first-place trophies back to the Eastern U.P.

The Gladstone High School softball team cruised to another district championship on Friday, beating the Negaunee Miners, 8-0, and then turning back the Houghton Gremlins, 13-0. Houghton eliminated Manistique, 9-3, earlier in the day.

The Rapid River Rockets got 12 strong innings from Heather Sanderson and a clutch hit from Sam Peterson to sweep a doubleheader from the Negaunee Miners, 1-0 and 9-3, Monday in Rapid River. The Manistique High School softball team has now won six straight games. The Emeralds won the championship of its "Pink Tournament" on Saturday, beating Munising, 4-2, and Norway, 9-3. The Emeralds made just one error in the doublehader. "You can't go wrong when you get defense like that," Manistique Coach Dave McNeil said. Haley MacGregor got the pitching victory in both games.
Manistique High School Senior Mike Nagy is in the spotlight as the Michigan High School Athletic Association chose him as its top story for the week. Nagy is a golfer, and he is the best in the Upper Peninsula this spring. He has signed to play college golf at the University of Tennessee. The Rapid River Rockets won two more games on Thursday, beating the Manistique Emeralds, 18-5 and 14-2 in Manistique. In the first game, the Emeralds managed to keep it a 3-3 game in the fourth inning before the Rockets blew it open. Averi Kanyuh got the pitching win, with Neena Brockway throwing the last three innings. Brockway also had five hits (including three doubles) in the game. In the second game, Savannah Stenlund pitched all five innings to earn the win. Haley MacGregor took the pitching loss in both games for Manistique. Click the above headline for more details.
The Manistique and Big Bay de Noc School Boards have approved having a co-op football program this fall. The decisions came at special meetings on Monday so that the schools could meet the Michigan High School Athletic Association's deadline for notification. The vote in Manistique was 4-3; it was 7-0 in Big Bay.
The Escanaba High School boys golf team opened the 2012 season on Monday placing first in the eight-team Gladstone Invitational. The Eskymos had 317 strokes, five better than second-place Marquette. Menominee was third with 335 strokes.
Manistique's Mike Nagy and Nick LaFave were the medalists in the scramble format, shooting a 71. Escanaba's Kevin Gendron and Phil LaMarch were second with 73's. Gladstone's Drew Scheeneman and Jake Peterson were tied for second with 73's.
The Manistique Emeralds varsity softball team welcomed two guests to the Emerald City on Monday for a softball doubleheader: the Escanaba JV Eskymos, and Old Man Winter. The teams played softball under snowy, windy conditions, with the JV Eskymos getting a big first inning to top Manistique, 13-7. The second game was cancelled.
"It was terrible," Manistique Coach Dave McNeil said. "Big winds, big snowflakes. And I'll tell you what. There's a huge advantage to getting big runs in the first inning when it's 28-degree weather! We played even with them after that, but that first inning was big."

The Manistique Emeralds jumped to a 3-0 lead early in their softball game against the Norway Knights Wednesday afternoon. But the Knights scored five runs in the second inning to get the lead, and Norway went on to post a 9-4 win in the first game of the doubleheader. The Knights also won the second game, 13-8.

Delta County's three high school softball teams had a successful weekend at the ninth annual Northern Michigan University "Spring Swing" softball tournament. The Rapid River Rockets won all three of their games, the Escanaba Eskymos went 2-1, and the Gladstone Braves went 1-1-1, with their only loss coming to the Rockets. And the Escanaba junior varsity team won all three of its games in the two-day event. The plan didn't work exactly the way Phil Griebel wanted it to work. But in the end, it worked. Griebel started several players who normally do not see much playing time on "Senior Night" and the Braves fell behind the Manistique Emeralds, 14-0, halfway through the first quarter. The team pulled together to get to within one point at halftime, and went on a 25-2 run in the second half to close the regular season with a 71-59 win. Four Gladstone Braves scored in double figures, and a couple of guys took turns at helping the team dig out from underneath that 14-0 hole.
