In Minnesota last night, the Class 2A baseball state quarterfinals were played in St. Cloud as Providence Academy faced Minnehaha Academy. The Providence team is coached by Escanaba native Kevin Tapani, who graduated from Escanaba High School in 1981 and went on to play for the Chicago Cubs and Minnesota Twins. Tapani's Providence team lost a heartbreaker in eight innings, 2-1.

The Escanaba Eskymos edged the Gladstone Braves to win the Great Northern Conference boys golf championship Thursday in Marquette. The Eskymos won with 322 strokes, with Gladstone second at 325 and Marquette third with 329. Marquette won the girls title.
