Gladstone got three home runs in the victory, including a laser off the bat of Trevor Thorbahn, the first of his Legion career. Also going deep: senior Johnny Soderman, and Bay College freshman Aedan Creten.
Thorbahn's home run was a two-run shot in the second inning, giving Gladstone a 2-1 lead after Menominee's Tyler Bouty had doubled home a run for the Red Wave in the first inning. Menominee got an unearned run to tie the game in the third inning, but Creten untied it with a solo shot to right field with one out in the bottom of the inning.
Later that inning, Davin Mattonen came through with a two-run single to left field to give the Indians a 5-2 lead. A double off the bat of Trent Rutter brought Mattonen home to make it a 6-2 game, and then in the fourth inning, Creten drew a walk and he rode home on Soderman's home run that quickly left Haase Field, making it an 8-2 game.
Gavin Frossard's RBI single later brought home Cooper Curtis to make it 9-2.
It stayed that way until the sixth inning, when Creten, in relief of Soderman, struck out two batters but walked three to load the bases. He then walked Dylan Beal to force in a run, and then Aiden Beal grounded out to bring home another run, cutting the Gladstone lead to 9-4.
In the bottom of the sixth, three straight walks loaded the bases for Gladstone, and a run scored on a wild pitch. Mattonen grounded out to bring home another run, and an error on Rutter's ground ball plated a run to make it a 12-4 Indians lead.
Casey Alworden drew a bases loaded walk, and then Isaac Ketchum put down a bunt that the Red Wave defense could not handle, and the game ended on the mercy rule.
Gladstone had ten hits in the game, including those three home runs. There were 14 walks and three hit batters between the two teams, and the young Menomninee team made four errors. The Red Wave fell to 6-11 on the season.
For Gladstone, and winning pitcher Thorbahn, it felt good to break a three-game losing streak that saw the Indians frustrated all weekend long.
Gladstone improved to 6-4 on the season and will be home for two games heading into the Independence Day holiday: against Marquette Monday night, and against Escanaba Wednesday evening. Both games will be broadcast on FM-93.5, AM-600, and on-line at www.rrnsports.com. |
