HARRIS, Mich.---The Purdue men's golf team put together a dominating performance over the span of two days to earn the title at the Island Resort Intercollegiate, held at Sage Run GC in Bark River, Michigan.
The Boilermakers tallied an 18-under par 846 (284-282-280) to easily outdistance Boise State by 13 shots and Georgia by 14 strokes in their first tournament action of the 2024-25 season.
The win, coming in head coach Andrew Sapp's first tournament as a head coach, was Purdue's first in a season-opening tournament since the 1993-94 season.
"This was a great team win with all of our guys contributing all week," Sapp said. "Our guys really worked hard over the summer and came back to school with something to prove. I am proud that we were able to get it done this week to give us a lot of confidence heading into the fall."
The Boilermakers entered the third and final round tied with Boise State, but quickly started to pull away. Led by sophomore Sam Easterbrook, Purdue's 13-stroke win was the fifth-largest margin of victory in school history.
Easterbrook fueled Purdue in the third round, shooting a career-best 65 with seven birdies, 11 pars and no bogeys on his card. He finished tied for sixth at 4-under par 212 (70-77-65) for his fourth career top-10 finish.
Two other Boilermakers, Kent Hsiao and Kentaro Nanayama posted top-10 finishes, tying for ninth at 2-under par 214. Hsiao, who shared the round-two lead, posted scores of 69-70-75, while Nanayama showcased his consistency with cards of 72-71-71.
Freshman Supapon Amornchaichan posted his first career top-20 finish in his first event, with a total of 1-under par 215 (73-71-71), good for 15th place, while Nels Surtani was tied for 22nd at 2-over par 218 (75-70-73).
Playing as individuals, Jenson Forrester was tied for 33rd at 4-over par 220 (70-77-73), Yilin Sun was tied for 44th at 7-over par 223 (71-80-72), and Andrew White was 78th at 36-over par 252 (86-87-79).

HARRIS, Mich. — Three Broncos finished in the top 10 as Boise State men's golf finished second in its season opener at the Island Resort Intercollegiate.
Luke Cushman (71-65-73 — 209, -7) finished third, and Gavyn Knight (73-69-72 — 214, -2) and Cole Rueck (70-71-73 — 214, -2) finished tied for ninth at Sage Run Golf Club.
Boise State finished ahead of Power-4 schools No. 21 Georgia, Michigan and UCF, and entered Monday's final round tied with eventual winner, Purdue. The Broncos shot 5-under 859 (286-280-293) on the weekend.
"It was a big week for our team," said head coach David Trainor. "Yesterday was not easy with wind gusts up to 35 miles per hour, and our guys handled the conditions and played great. We didn't have our best today, but these guys dug in and fought for every shot. It was a huge week for (Cushman) – his best tournament in college, lowest round and best individual finish for him. I'm proud of him and all our guys. We will learn from this week and be ready for our next event in Fort Collins."
The second-place effort marks the best team finish under head coach David Trainor.
This is the highest team finish since Boise State won the Redhawks Invitational (April 4-5, 2022). The Broncos finished ahead of a ranked team in No. 21 Georgia.
Luke Cushman finished in the top five and top 10 for the first time in his career. Cushman's 7-under 65 in the second round is tied for the ninth-lowest round by an individual in program history. His 8-under through 36 holes is tied for the third-lowest 36-hole score in program history, in relation to par.
The Broncos return to action at the Ram Masters, Sept. 17-18, in Fort Collins, Colo.

HARRIS, Mich. - Saint Mary's took advantage of great conditions in the final round of the Island Resort Intercollegiate to shoot a tournament low 14-under-par to jump SEC member Georgia for sole possession of third place.
All four counting scores were under par for the Gaels and they were led by a stellar 66(-6) from Connor Reis who had yet to record a round under par heading into the final day.
Zack Missigman had also failed to get into red figures prior to today's round but was the team's next best finisher at 4-under-par. The team's 274 (-14) final round was the lowest single round performance since breaking the program record in 2023 when they recorded a 266 (-22) at the White Sands Bahamas Invitational.
"The guys fought hard after a slow start to round one to move all the way up the leaderboard into 3rd place" said head coach Scott Hardy. "We battled high winds on the opening day but stayed patient and focused".
Go Nakatsukasa and Avery Lazarski were the other two counting scores for Saint Mary's as Nakatsukasa recorded his lowest round of the event at 3-under-par and finished the event with back-to-back rounds of under par. Lazarski recorded his second round of 1-under-par to finish the event in red figures and round out the team's scoring. Aidan Lee was not far off though as he shot an even 72 to close out his weekend for the Gaels.
Reis's 6-under performance catapulted him into the top-10 as he was the team's top finisher at 3-under-par good for 8th place individually. As the team's lone individual, Ian Bruchhauser recorded his second straight round under par with a 69 (-3) to jump into a tie for 27th place out of nearly 80 golfers in the field.
"Hanging tough on day one allowed us to come out today and take advantage of good scoring conditions and put up a ton of birdies. Clutch putts on the last hole pushed the team ahead of Georgia and cemented a nice start to the season" (Hardy).

HARRIS, Mich. -- With four of its five tallies in the red, the University of Michigan men's golf team pieced together a final round 279 (-9) today (Sunday, Sept. 2) for an 876 54-hole total to finish fifth in its season-opening Island Resort Intercollegiate at the Sage Run Golf Club.
Looking to defend its 2023 team title, the Wolverines got off to a slow start opening 297 in Sunday's first round, despite freshman RJ Arone carding an even 72 in his first collegiate round.
As senior Hunter Thomson followed his opening 74 with a 70 (-2) and Arone etching a second 72 (E), U-M improved with a 291 in the second round to position itself fifth (588) after day one
With nine of the 12 teams closing with a sub-par team tally, four Wolverines posted sub-par rounds led by Thomson and senior Yuqi Liu's 68s (-4) to help give the Maize and Blue a closing 277 (-11) -- tying for the second-lowest team tally on the final day. Despite the rally, U-M's 865 (+1) event total helped the Wolverines maintain their standing as they finished fifth.
For the 24th time in his career, Thomson paced the Wolverines as he recorded the 17th sub-par 54-hole total of his brilliant career. After his opening 74 (+2), he rallied with his 70 (-2) and 68 (-4) to crack the top 10 for the 16th time. In three overall events at Sage Run, Thomson has eight of nine rounds under par, averaging 69.7 per 18 holes.
Continuing his strong summer play, Arone shined in his collegiate debut posting a 215 (-1; 72-72-71) total and earning a tie for 15th. His finish is the best for a Wolverine in nearly 10 years. Former U-M All-American Kyle Mueller won the 2014 Wolverine Intercollegiate (Sept. 6-7) in his collegiate debut.
Fifth-year senior Ben Hoagland's even par 216 (E; 73-73-70) helped place three Wolverines among the top 20 as he tied for 19th. Like Thomson, Hoagland has posted seven of nine rounds under par at the Island Resort, averaging 70.2 per round.
In the first of five September events, U-M will head to Toledo, Ohio, on Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 9-10) for the Inverness Intercollegiate at the famed Inverness Club. The 54-hole event features a stellar 14-team field, including top-ranked defending national champion, Auburn.
