The Huskies elevate to 19-6 overall and 14-3 in conference play with a series sweep over Northern Michigan. The Wildcats drop to 16-9 overall and 10-7 in the loop. "That's a good win—it's not a masterclass in how to play with a 17-point lead but credit to Northern, they had a chance to win the game and we're very fortunate to get out of here with the win," head coach Josh Buettner said. "I think our guys are confident no matter the scenario at this point we're going to give ourselves a chance to keep playing. We do need to be sharper down the stretch. " The Wildcats were one-dimensional offensively as Kuehl accounted for 13 of NMU's first 18 points through the 3:23 mark as the Huskies led 20-18. Matt Schmainda was big for the Huskies down the stretch of the opening period, cashing in a triple and finding an offensive rebound, which translated into a 3-pointer by Hobson to put the Black & Gold ahead by 10 (28-18) with 1:43 to go. Back-to-back and-ones by Nordgaard and Tomashek pushed the Huskies to their largest lead (42-28) at the 16:05 mark of the second half. Michigan Tech would see the lead grow to as much as 17 points at 54-37, then 56-39 with 8:23 to play. However, the Wildcats would not go gentle into the night but instead claw back into the contest, putting together a 13-0 to the 4:12 mark, highlighted by two 3-pointers from Cal Klesmit off the bench. Out of the media break, the GLIAC Preseason Player of the Year, Marcus Tomashek, scored the Huskies next five points with a layup and a 3-pointer to keep the Black & Gold ahead with 2:06 to go. Foul shots from Kuehl made it a tied game at 61-all with 48 seconds to play, but Tomashek came up clutch with a banked shot to allow the Huskies a two-for-one opportunity. After multiple offensive rebounds in the paint from the Wildcats, Gabe Smith came down with the rebound and headed to the free-throw line, where he would go two-of-two and make it a four-point affair with under 10 seconds to play. Julien Smith hit a 3-pointer to make it a one-point game, but the Wildcats fouled immediately after Tomashek got the inbound pass, sending him to the foul line to gift the Huskies the victory after two free throws and not enough time for the Wildcats to get a final shot off. Tomashek led all scorers with 21 points as Adam Hobson chipped in 13 off the bench. Josh Terrian led the way in rebounding with six boards. Kuehl recorded a team-high 19 points and 11 rebounds as Sam Privet added 13 points. |
