Gladstone Indians Season Abruptly Ends At States

MARQUETTE----All of the hard work the Gladstone Indians baseball team put in since April came down to one weekend of baseball: the state tournament in Marquette.

And unfortunately for the Tribe, the weekend was a short one as the team lost both games in the double-elimination event...and both losses came in extra innings.

After losing a marathon game to the defending state champions on Thursday, the Indians went extra innings again on Friday and lost to the Menominee Red Wave, 7-6.

Gladstone's season came to a screeching halt with a final record of 38-12.

Indians catcher Cody Frazer bats Friday.
It looked good early as Jake Pearson was strong on the mound and the Indians grabbed a 3-0 lead. But in the sixth inning, Landon Maccoux hit a three-run homer over the short fence on Marquette's "second field", and the Red Wave had a 4-3 lead.

Gladstone tied the game with an unearned run, and then took the lead in the eighth inning when Matt Weyers walked and scored on a double by Paul Tomaszewski. Cody Frazer's sacrafice bunt scored Tomaszewski and the Indians took a 6-4 lead into the ninth inning.

But Menominee (14-24) took advantage of the small field again when Zavh Budzynski hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning to tie it. The Indians could not score in the bottom of the inning, and the Red Wave pushed across a run in the top of the tenth inning.

Also in the tournament on Friday, Marquette eliminated Escanaba, 8-0, and Menominee eliminated Marquette, 10-8.

In the night game, Kingsford upset Hudson, 9-7.

Friday's game was the last for "super seniors" Matt Weyers, Paul Tomaszewski, Peyton Jurek, and Jared Stenson. They will be greatly missed next season.
