DETROIT---Former Northern Michigan University goaltender Jared Coreau will be on the bench Wednesday when the Detroit Red Wings open the NHL season against the Buffalo Sabres. Coreau had been sent down to the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins, but on Monday, he was called up and he practiced with the Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena.
Coreau will back up starting goaltender Jimmy Howard until back-up Jonas Gustavsson recovers from a groin injury.
