MARQUETTE---The Houghton High School hockey team is serving notice that it is the team to beat in the Upper Peninsula this season.
After blanking Escanaba, 6-0, last Friday, the Gremlins posted another shutout on Tuesday, topping the Marquette Redmen, 8-0, at Marquette's Lakeview Arena.
Ried Pietila scored the first two goals of the game, and then in the second period, Jed Kallio and Spencer Donnelly lit the lamp for the Gremlins. The game ended on the mercy rule in the third period when Houghton scored for more times.
Houghton goaltender Javon Wiitala got the shutout in net. John Beckman took the loss in net for the Redmen, who fell to 0-1-1 on the season after tying Hancock last Friday.
