NCA Jets Still Perfect After Dominating Stephenson

POWERS---The North Central High School boys basketball team continued its early-season dominance Saturday with a 70-28 win over the Stephenson Eagles in Powers.

The Jets improved to 5-0 on the season, with every game being decided by a wide amount on the scoreboard. NCA was a state semifinalist last season.

North Central's Eric Prestay gets the loose ball from Stephenson's Conner Cappaert.
North Central rolled to a 21-6 lead after the first quarter, and then kept adding to its lead until the 40-point mercy rule was invoked during the third quarter.

"They're playing really well together," North Central Head Coach Adam Mercier said. "We've got seven seniors on this team, and some underclassmen that have played a lot of basketball together."

"Nice group of kids, great to coach. They're athletic enough that we can definitely use that to our advantage."

Travis Vincent had 15 points and 18 rebounds to lead the Jets. Rob Granquist added 11 points and Trevor Ekberg scored ten. Freshman Jason Whitens had eight points and sophomore Caleb Martin scored seven points.

"I thought we gave up too many rebounds in the first half," Mercier said. "We can't do that. We're definately going to shore that up at practice on Monday. I thought, overall, our defensive effort tonight, we contested a lot of shots, which was good."

NCA's Trevor Ekberg scores on the baseline.
"If we do that the rest of the season, it will mean good things for us."

Brandon Kau led Stephenson (1-5) with 12 points.

During halftime of the game, the 1984 North Central Jets State Championship team was honored for its success. CLICK HERE  to read that story.
