POWERS---It's been three decades, but the Spalding-Powers-Hermanaville community has not forgotten the North Central Jets basketball team that won the Class D state championship in 1984. Many of the boys...who are now grown men...were back in town Saturday night to be honored during a ceremony during the Jets-Stephenson game.
That NCA team pulled stunning upsets of Lansing Christian in the state semifinals, and Detroit East Catholic, in the state championship game at the University of Michigan's Crisler Arena.
Jets Coach Bob Whitens, a U.P. Sports Hall of Famer, adressed the men.
"Thirty years ago, you guys did something that a lot of people thought you couldn't do," Whitens said. "Well, it all comes down to one thing: you have to believe in what you have to do as a player, and as a coach."
