GLADSTONE---The Gladstone Braves scored five runs in the final two innings to tie the Marquette Redettes, 5-5, Tuesday, at the Gladstone Softball Fields.
The game was called after seven innings when a snowstorm hit the area.
The Braves trailed 5-0 entering the sixth inning, but the girls rallied for four runs to get back into the game. Alyssa Polley led off with an infield single, then Sam Sailer then got on base with a fielder's choice. Lexi Hongisto walked to load the bases.
Polley scored on a passed ball, and then Morgan Kowalski put down a perfect suicide bunt behind Marquette pitcher Casey Wiggins, and two runs scored to make it 5-3.
Jenna Steinhoff then singled, moving Kowalski to third base. Kowalski ended up scoring on a passed ball, to bring the Braves to within 5-4. The Braves tied the game in the seventh as Polley was hit by a pitch, stole second, and scored on a Hongisto hit.
The game did not go to extra innings because heavy snow moved into the area, so the teams agreed to end the game in a 5-5 tie. The Braves and Redettes also played to a tie earlier this month, inside the comfortable confines of the Superior Dome.
At the plate, Hongisto was 2-for-3 with one RBI, and Kowalski was 2-for-4 with two runs batted in. Steinhoff was two-for-three, and Polley was one-for-three.
Breanna Winling got the tie in the circle. She pitched all seven innings, giving up ten hits, striking out three, and walking just one batter.
Wiggins also got a tie for Marquette. She had 15 stikeouts in the game, with one walk.
