The Division Three All-District baseball and softball teams have been announced, and the Gladstone Braves are well-represented on both teams.
In baseball, Gladstone seniors Justin Jurek (catcher), and Jake Peterson (outfielder) were honored by the Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association. Junior Hunter Garling was named All-District as a utility player. Garling was a D-3 All-Stater in 2014.
Both Jurek and Peterson were also named to the All-Academic team for their outstanding work in the classroom.
Both had grade point averages of 3.55 or higher to be considered.
The three Gladstone boys will now be considered for All-Region honors going forward.
Meanwhile, the Gladstone softball team dominated the Division Three All-District team. It's a team that included 14 girls, and nine of them were from Gladstone.
The other five girls on the All-District team were from Westwood.
There were no girls selected from Manistique, Negaunee, Houghton, Hancock, Gwinn, Ishpeming, and Calumet, who were also involved in the softball district.
The nine Gladstone girls who earned All-District honors are:
Anna Caramella (Sr., outfielder)
Lexi Hongisto (Sr., shortstop)
Morgan Kowalski (Jr., catcher)
Tasi Martinez (So., DP/Flex)
Lauren Parrett (Sr., outfielder)
Sammy Sailer (Jr., third base)
Paige Schwartz (Jr., second base)
Jenna Steinhoff (So., pitcher)
Sydney Winkelbauer (Sr., utility player)
All nine Braves girls athletes will now be considered for All-Region honors.
Gladstone's boys and girls teams will travel downstate on Friday for this weekend's Division Three Regional Tournament at Traverse City St. Francis High School.
Both teams will face Tawas in the regional semifinals at 10:00 Saturday morning. The boys game will be broadcast live on WGKL-FM (105.5), and on-line at www.rrnsports.com. We will also keep you up to date on the girls contest.
