ST. CLAIR---The Escanaba Major Little League All-Stars (age 10-12) advanced to the Michigam state tournament quarterfinals on Sunday in St. Clair, beating Bay County, 12-2, in a game shortened to four innings by the mercy rule.

Ruby Jacobsen had two triples and three runs batted in, Maci Engebretsen continued her hot hitting with two more big hits to the fence, and Escanaba had 15 base hits all together by nine different girls. Livvy Nolde had two big hits from way at the bottom of the batting order to help to flip the batting order in both the second and fourth inniungs.

Amiya Humbert pitched three of the four innings to get the win, and Barlow Bosk pitched one inning of relief. Hayley Trombley caught two straight line drives at first base to stop Bay County runs from crossing the plate in the third inning.

Bay County got an RBI double from Vivian Meissner in the fourth inning, but Humbert got a called third strike on Lauren Rubis to end the game.

The game was a true “play-in” game, with both teams at 1-1 in pool play and only one playoff spot available. And it started 1 hour, 45 minutes late, because of a very long game on that field earlier in the day. It started after every other game was done.
Escanaba faces Grosse Pointe in the state quarterfinals Monday at noon. Catch the broadcast at noon Eastern time on FM-93.5, AM-600, and radiosresultsnetwork.com.

Also in St. Clair on Sunday, the other UP team, Marquette wrapped up state tournament play with a 15-1 loss to Georgetown. Marquette was the only team to score a run against the District Nine champions at this tournament.
