The West Iron County High School varsity football season has been cancelled.
Superintendent Kevin Schmutzler made the announcement Monday night on scocial media in an open letter to the community.
The decision continues to add to the number of local schools who have cancelled thier seasons due to lack of players and injuries. Mid Peninsula, Florence, and Cheboygan are the others.
The superintendent's letter follows below:
Dear Wykon Community,
This letter is to inform you that we are unable to continue our varsity football season. Due to a combination of low participation numbers and injuries, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the remainder of our 2026 football season.
We know how much our Wykon teams mean to our students, parents, coaches, and community so we understand how disappointing this news is for everyone who supports our football team. We need to recognize and appreciate how hard our student athletes and coaches have worked, and how disappointing it is to have to end the season early.
If you have any questions regarding this matter, please feel free to reach out to me. Thank you for your continued support of West Iron County Schools students and staff.
Sincerely,
Kevin Schmutzler
