Esky Girls Finish Busy Weekend With Three Losses

ESCANABA---The Escanaba High School softball team finally got to play a home game on Friday as the Alpena Wildcats came from Lower Michigan for a doubleheader. The Wildcats won the opener, 8-3, before the Eskymos rallied to win the nightcap, 7-6.

The Eskymos then travelled to Wisconsin on Saturday to play in the Ashwaubenon Invitational, and the girls lost all three games. Escanaba lost to the host Jaguars, 7-3, and then fell to Germantown (Wis.), 9-8, and Kenosha Bradford (Wis.), 9-5.

No details were available about the Saturday games. Friday's doubleheader against Alpena was played under non-springlike conditions. The temperature was 42 degrees at game time, and it dropped to 35 degrees by the fifth inning of the opener.

Umpire calls time as the rain pours down.
There was steady light rain for several innings, and there was one brief rain delay.

That made the field a muddy mess, with the girls trying to knock mud out of their cleats.

In the opener, Jayme Frappier singled home Callie Heller in the third inning to tie the game at 1-1. Then, in the fifth inning, there was a downpour, which led to a five-minute rain delay.

When the girls went back to action, it was disaster for the Eskymos.

There were three errors in the inning (including two on one play) and the Wildcats scored five times, knocking Frappier out of the circle and making it a 6-1 game.

Escanaba got a run back in the bottom of the fifth on a Heller grounder that scored Jenn Koish on a fielder's choice. But the Eskymos stranded the bases loaded.

Alpena then tacked on two runs in the sixth inning against relief pitcher Katie Ross.

Jayme Frappier threw in both games.
The Eskymos had one moment to smile in the bottom of the seventh inning when the freshman Ross clubbed a long home run over the right field fence.

In the second game, Ashley Cook hit a two-run homer to help the Eskymos build a 4-1 lead early in the contest.

The lead grew to 6-1 before the Wildcats out on a big rally in the top of the seventh inning, scoring five times to tie the game at 6-6.

The Eskymos won the game in the bottom of the seventh inning when Frappier was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

After Saturday's losses, Escanaba's record dropped to 5-5 on the season.
