Eskymos, Rockets Battle In Lions Softball Challenge

ESCANABA---The Escanaba Eskymos hosted the annual Lions Softball Challenge Saturday at Lemmerand Park, as eight teams from across the Upper Peninsula, northern Lower Michigan, and Wisconsin, converged to play some ball.

The Eskymos faced fellow Delta County entrant Rapid River in Saturday's second game, and Escanaba pulled out a 7-3 victory to finish the day with a 2-0 record.

Sam Connor pitched a complete game for the Eskymos, while Savannah Stenlund took the loss in the circle for the Rockets.

Michelle LaFave ripped a two-run homer for the Eskymos, while Kendyl Miller smacked a solo home run for the Rockets.

Hannah Kanyuh also had a two-run double for Rapid River.

Earlier in the day, Rapid River topped Negaunee, 7-1, behind a complete game from Stenlund. And the Eskymos mercied Marshfield (Wis.), 11-1, in five innings. Jayme Frappier earned the win in the circle and LaFave drove in four runs for Escanaba.

Later, Rapid River lost to Cheboygan, 13-1. Escanaba's third game was cancelled because Neenah (Wis.) had reached its maximum number of games played under Wisconsin High School softball rules. So, the girls played a short scrimmage.

Saturday's scores:
Escanaba 11, Marshfield 1
Rapid River 7, Negaunee 1
Cheboygan 19, Sault Ste. Marie 4
