Big Third Quarter Sends Menominee Past Gladstone
GLADSTONE---It appears that the Menominee High School boys basketball players were really, really hungry for some Wendy's Old-Fashioned hamburgers Friday night. The boys were told that if they beat the Gladstone Braves in a Great Northern Conference game, they'd stop at the Wendy's in Escanaba and grab a bite to eat on the way home. If the Maroons lost Friday night's game, they'd get nothing. Menominee scored 25 points in the third quarter and pulled away for a 53-40 victory over the Braves. It took almost four minutes for anybody to score during an ice-cold first quarter of shooting. Menominee's Adam Nolde nailed a three-pointer, but picked up his second foul moments later and spent the rest of the first half on the bench. Gladstone's Reece Castor scored on a basket and foul shot to put the Braves on the board, tying the game. Points remained at a premium for the rest of the half, with Gladstone leading, 17-14. Both teams came out firing in the third quarter, with each team scoring twice in the first 48 seconds. But the Braves couldn't keep up the pace. Nolde made up for lost time by scoring nine points in the quarter, and Marcus McKenney scored eight points. The Braves could get no close than seven points the rest of the way, even though Menominee missed the front end of one-and-one's three times. Nolde ended up with 16 points and McKinney scored 12. Castor led the Braves with ten points, while Joe Gibbs and Ben Schwalbach both scored nine points. The Gladstone freshman team beat the Menominee junior varsity team, 72-62.
