Escanaba Tennis Team Wins; Gladstone Braves Fall

MENOMINEE---The Escanaba High School tennis team posted a 6-2 win over the Menominee Maroons in a make-up match Friday evening in Menominee.

Meanwhile, the Gladstone Braves lost to Westwood, 7-1.

In the Escanaba-Menominee contest, the best match of the day was at #1 singles as Eskymo Josh Grassel faced Maroon Jonathon Anttila.

The match went on for three hours, and included two tiebreakers, both won by Anttila.

Grassel had two set points in the first, leading 40-15, before Antilla fought back to force the tiebreak, and then win, 7-0.

Grassel regrouped to win the second set, 7-5.

The third and deciding set went back and forth before it was tied at 6-6, forcing another tiebreaker. Anttila won that tiebreaker, 7-3.

The #1 doubles match was also a marathon, although not a three-hour-long event like the top singles match was.

Menominee's Levi Kempka and Jake Anglehart defeated Escanaba's Paul Carne and Nick Dufour in two very tough sets that both went to tiebreakers.

The Menominee duo won the match, 7-6, 7-6, but won the first set on a 7-5 tiebreak, and the second set on an 8-6 tiebreak.

The Eskymos won all of the remaining matches to take the team victory. At #2 singles, Christer Carne won the first set but dropped the second set to Menominee's Tyler Kuester.

Carne didn't need a tiebreaker, however, winning the decisive third set, 6-2.

The rest of the Eskymos won in straight sets, at #3 and #4 singles, and at #2, #3, and #4 doubles.

WESTWOOD 7, GLADSTONE 1---Gladstone's #1 singles player, Alec Miron, was the only winner on Friday, beating Westwood's Brett Fredrickson, 6-4, 6-4.

"Alec started off slow," Braves Coach Dan Williams said. "He changed his game and started playing more consistently. It was a good win for Alec."

The rest of the Braves lost in straight sets, although Williams was happy with Sean Holm at #4 singles.

Holm lost to Anthony Couveau, 7-5, 7-45.

"He was down 1-4 in the first and second sets and came back to tie at 5-5," Williams said. "He ended up losing the sets, but it was a good effort by Sean. I was impressed with how he stayed focused and came back to make a match of it."

The Gladstone-Westwood scores are posted at the bottom of this page.
