The Escanaba Eskymos and Gladstone Braves both picked up doubleheader sweeps in baseball action Thursday night.
The Eskymos beat the North Central Jets 12-5 and 11-2 in Hermansville, while the Braves topped the Negaunee Miners in Gladstone, 10-2 and 12-1.
In Gladstone, Dylan Pepin pitched a six-inning complete game in the opener, throwing 93 pitches and striking out six batters, allowing two earned runs. He also had two runs batted in at the plate. Noah Peterson added two RBI as well for Gladstone.
In the second game, which went four innings, Braden Sundquist got the victory, using just 55 pitches to take care of the young Negaunee team. Gladstone had eleven hits on offense.
The Braves improved to 5-2 on the young season.
In Hermansville, the Eskymos fell behind early, 4-1, as senior Nick Kolich got the start on the mound, and had a rough first inning. But after that, he settled down, tossing four shutout innings before Carter Hudson finished up in the sixth inning.
Kolich got plenty of offensive help after that rocky first inning as Collin Arnt had two hits and two runs batted in, and Brett Schlenvogt added a two-run double.
NCA got two hits apiece from Wyatt Riley and Luke Gorzinski.
In the second game, Schlenvogt got the win on the mound as he gave up just three hits in five innings of work. Bryant Maki, playing for the first time this season after being quarantined due to COVID-19 contact tracing, made the most of it. He had three hits in the nightcap, including a home run...the first for the Eskymos as a team this season.
Escanaba improved to 5-0 on the season.
