Beaudry Scores 21 But Braves Lose To Negaunee

GLADSTONE---Jessica Beaudry got off to a quick start for the Gladstone Braves basketball team Wednesday night, but her early dominance couldn't lead the girls to victory as the Negaunee Miners pulled out a 53-49 non-conference win.

Beaudry scored ten of her team's first 12 points, and she scored a game-high 21 points altogether. But Gladstone took a close loss for the second straight night, after also losing in overtime (47-46) to Escanaba Tuesday night.

Gladstone Coach Karl Dollhopf was satisfied with the girls' play, despite the loss.

Jess Beaudry (32) shoots as Negaunee's Roasliee Anderson defends.
"I had scouted Negaunee and I knew that they had some shooters," Dollhopf said. "But I liked our effort. Our defensive effort was real good.

"Those were probably the best shooters that we played against all year, as far as pure shootters and spacing goes."

Beaudry scored seven points to give her team a 7-2 lead, but the Miners got three baskets from Adena Anderson and shut the Braves down for the next few minutes.

The result was a 13-2 Negaunee spurt that saw the visitors in front, 15-9, late in the first quarter.

But Beaudry hoisted up a desperation three-point basket to end the first quarter. It clanked off the rim, popped into the air, and went in. Gladstone was within 15-12.

"She's capable of that kind of effort," Dollhopf said of Beaudry. "I like the way that she's starting to look at the basket. Sometimes, she's too unselfish. But, boy, when she gets it going, that's really a spark for us, and that helps."

The second quarter went back and forth, with five different Braves players scoring and the Miners getting a three from Kayla Hakala and a pair of hoops from Jordyn LaFraniere. Negaunee scored 13 points and Gladstone had 11 during that quarter.

Gladstone's Jess Beaudry goes strong to the hole.
Negaunee (13-3) led, 28-23, at the half. The Braves scored the first six points in the third quarter to take a 29-28 lead, as Lexi Hongisto scored off the glass.

The Braves carried a 37-36 lead into the fourth quarter, hoping to upset the Upper Peninsula's fourth-ranked team. But in the final eight minutes, the Miners stepped up.

Negaunee's Ashley Veale drives on Gladstone's Alexis St. Cyr (5) Wednesday.
Negaunee scored 17 points in the fourth quarter, including nine at the free throw line. Taylor Wilber's three-point play with 3:03 left in the game gave Negaunee its biggest lead of the night, 47-39, wrapping up an 11-2 Miners scoring spurt.

Gladstone (9-8) did not fold. Hongisto nailed a three-pointer, and got fouled, with 2:15 left to play. She hit the free throw, and Gladstone was within two points at 49-47.

Negaunee, however, made its free throws down the stretch and pulled out the win. The Miners were 13 of 15 from the foul line. Gladstone was 15 of 25 from the stripe.

"They showed why they are #4 in the U.P. by making those free throws," Dollhopf said. "But I really appreciate our effort, and I told the girls that in the locker room."

Jordyn LaFreniere scores for Negaunee.
LaFreniere scored 15 points and Kayla Hakala had 11 to lead Negaunee. Besides Beaudry's 21 points, Hongisto scored ten points for the Braves. Gladstone travels to Sault Ste. Marie Saturday for a non-conference game.
