WELLS----
The Hancock Bulldogs hockey team scored three third period goals to break a 2-2 tie and beat the Escanaba Eskymos, 5-2, Friday night, in Escanaba.

Todd Kilpela scored two of those three third period goals for Hancock, as the Bulldogs threw an incredible 50 shots on Escanaba sophomore goaltender Cully Hayes. Nearly half of those 50 shots came in the third period, as the Bulldogs outshot a tired Escanaba team, 23-4.

Escanaba scored first with 2:29 left in the first period on a power play goal by Cale Carter, off an assist from Graham Johnson. The Bulldogs got even, though, with 14 second left in the first period on a goal from Ted Heinonen, off an assist from Bryce Vanderwest.

The Eskymos took a 2-1 lead less than two minutes into the second period when Nolan Bink found the back of the net on an unassisted goal. But Hancock tied it up with 4:33 left in the second period when Heinonen scored again, this time with a Lukas Axford assist.

That sent us to the third period tied a 2-2, with Hancock and Escanaba combining for 48 shots on goal in the first 34 minutes of play.

In the third period, the Bulldogs took control, as Kilpela scored 3:25 into the period, and then again at the 10:09 mark. Brady Axford's goal just 1:38 after Kilpela's second goal made it a 5-2 game, and that's how it ended, with Hancock outshooting Escanaba, 50-25.

Hayes, a sophomore, was credited with 45 saves, while Bulldogs goaltender Daniel Wroblewski had 23 saves in the Hancock net. The win improved the Bulldogs' record to 6-3-1 on the season, while Escanaba's record fell to 4-5-0.

Escanaba will host Calumet next Friday night. The Copper Kings are 0-5-2 so far this season after tying Painesdale-Jeffers, 6-6, in a wild game at the Armory Friday night. Face-off nect Friday is set for 7:00, and the game will be broadcast on FM-106.3, and on-line at https://streamdb7web.securenetsystems.net/cirrusencore/WMXG
