Marquette Boys, Houghton Girls Win UP Golf Titles

HOUGHTON----The high school golf season came to an end for the Upper Peninsula's biggest schools Wednesday with the U.P. Finals at the Portage Golf Course in Houghton.

In the boys meet, the Marquette Redmen won the championship with 308 strokes. Houghton was second with 323, Gladstone took third (330) and Escanaba fourth (339).

Marquette was led by Scot Frazier, who won the medalist honors with a 71. Teammate Jordan Frazier was third with a 76, with Calumet's Reese Lassila in second place (74).

Gladstone's Ben Lasecki finished in sixth spot after shooting a 79. Braves teammate Adam Scheeneman was 11th with an 83. Kyle Pouliot and Max Strasser both shot 84's.

For Escanaba, Dane Casperson had the best score, finishing eighth with an 81. Freshman Nick Aird carded an 85 and was tied for 18th.

Junior Nick LeMire was 21st after shooting an 86, Nick Laviolette shot an 87, and freshman Dylan Gauthier shot an 88.

In the girls meet, Houghton used the home-course advantage to win the team trophy with 347 strokes. Marquette took second place with 362 strokes, and Escanaba finished third with 389. Gladstone was fourth with 410 strokes.

Marquette's Avery Rochester (pictured above) dominated the course by shooting a blistering 69. She won by 13 strokes over second place Megan Kelly of Houghton.

Gladstone's Callie Jensen shot an 83 and finished third. Braves teammate Gabby Movalson shot a 104 and finished in a three-way tie for 15th place.

Escanaba's best scores came from Jalyn Dagenais and Kelsey Motto, who both shot an 86 and finished tied for sixth place. Payton Shelafoe was 12th (with a 103).
