A Sweet Repeat! Eskymo Girls Head To Regionals

CHEBOYGAN---John LaMarch and his Escanaba Eskymo softball program came oh-so-close to championship trophies over the course of the past decade.

Finally, last year, the girls won not only a district championship, but also, a regional crown. Well, here in the Spring of 2013, the Eskymo girls had numerous games cancelled by wintry weather, but the ladies pulled through for another district title.

Becca Piron leads off base on Saturday.
"These kids were experienced," LaMarch said. "We've got a lot of seniors. It's just a good day for them, really. They hit the ball."

"I'm feeling really good," Eskymo senior Emily Bogaudo said. "I knew we could do it. I had a lot of confidence."

"It's been a great ride," Eskymo senior Codi Jenshak said. "There's nothing better for the senior year!"

Escanaba survived a challenge from the first-year Kingsford Flivvers in Saturday's Division Two district semifinal, 6-4, and then slid past Petoskey, 6-0, in the district championships.

The result sends the girls into next week's regional in Cadillac.

Eskymo Codi Jenshak comments.
In the opener, the Eskymos seemed to dominate the first-year Flivvers. Escanaba built a 5-0 lead, with Codi Jenshak doing well in the pitcher's circle. But Kingsford rallied after falling behind, scoring four runs in the sixth inning.

That cut Escanaba's lead to 5-4, and there were some nervous moments as Jayme Frappier came on to pitch.

"We had a couple of plays that happened that just rattled us a little bit," Jenshak said. "We were having a hard time there, but we came back."

Braedyn Bosilovatz bats on Saturday.
Frappier got the double play ball to end the inning, then the Eskymos scored in the next inning to give an insurance run. Escanaba ended up winning the game, 6-4.

"Thank God we have Jayme Frappier on the team," LaMarch said. "She came in and put the fire out. You try to do right by the kids, and sometimes, the best-laid plans don't work out and you suffer for it. That's coaching, right?"

The other semifinal was wild, as the Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils faced the Petoskey Northmen. The Sault carried a 3-0 lead into the seventh inning, but Petoskey scored four times to win the contest, 4-3.

That set up a championship tilt between the Eskymos and the Northmen. And that title game was no match, as Frappier tossed a shutout in a 6-0 Escanaba victory.

Emily Bogaudo clears bases in Esky win over Petoskey.
In that game, Escanaba got a three-run double in the fourth inning from Bogaudo ripped a bases-loaded double, turning a 1-0 game into a 4-0 contest.

Bogaudo was then brought home on an RBI single by Jenshak, making it 5-0.

"It felt great," Bogaudo said of her hit. "I really wanted it to go over (the fence). That's the third one that's been close, and I just can't get one over!"

Escanaba (17-7) had not played Petoskey this season, but the girls were still familiar with the Northmen.

Emily Bogaudo catches on Saturday.
"A lot of us have played against them before," Jenshak said. "We had a pretty good idea of what they were about. We were confident in our team and in our abilities."

It was a long week for the Eskymos. They had to travel to Cheboygan on Tuesday, only to get rained out. The girls came back on Friday and beat Cheboygan, 10-3, in a play-in game before winning the two games on Saturday.

"It was not fun having to drive all the way back (on Tuesday) without even getting to play," Bogaudo said. "But I love hanging out with my team. They're fun."

So, Escanaba earned three wins in the district tournament, and now the girls will play in the regional tournament next weekend.

The Eskymos will open up against the host Cadillac Vikings in Cadillac. Game time is 10:00 a.m. next Saturday. The other game is Fremont against Chippewa Hills.

"We're just really excited for the kids," LaMarch said. "They're happy. They've worked so hard, and they deserve this."

Final out of the championship game.
"We're excited," Jenshak said. "We're confident. I think we're going to do a good job!"

Because of other Saturday morning programming, WCHT-AM (600) cannot broadcast Saturday's opening game live on the radio.

The game will be broadcast live over the Internet on www.rrnsports.com at 10:00, and the game will be rebroadcast on the radio at about 12:15 (on WCHT).
